How do we operate?
- Regular Troop meetings are every Wednesday night.
- Each month we have a campout, outing, or other major activity for the whole troop.
- Boards of Review for rank advancement are held by Committee members during the normal Troop Meeting.
- Committee Meetings are held the third Monday of every month.
- Our Merit Badge program is led by adult Scouters and help every boy explore their interests and hobbies.
- We live by the Scout Law, the Scout Oath, and the Outdoor Code.
- We emphasize youth protection and actively manage Two Deep Leadership.
- We respect the rights of others but insist on high integrity from our members.
- We have several Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle each year, but emphasize learning and experience in Scouting principles rather than the minimum set of badges.
- We are well outfitted and enjoy the experience of sharing the great outdoors.
What does Troop 160 have to offer?
- Our scouts have fun while they are learning and building character.
- We emphasize the basics in scouting: Camping, Cooking, Hiking, First Aid, etc.
- We are a Boy-led Troop with active adult participation.
- We support all age groups.
- Our older Scouts are active in teaching our younger Scouts the basics and learned skills.
- New Scouts (first year) have a special program to help them learn, grow, and advance.
- Just in 2010 our scouts have received over 200 merit badges and 60+ rank advancements.
- We have seven Eagle Scout advisers who work with Life Scouts on reaching Eagle rank.
- Just in 2010 we had twelve of our Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout!
- We have produced 114 Eagle scouts since 1987.
- Experienced Scouts (second and third year) help guide the New Scouts and continue their own advancement.
- Our Venture Crew (aged 13+) get to try activities that stretch their outdoor skills and get closer to the Scout Adventure.
- Our High Adventure treks take us to New Mexico, backpacking in Virginia and West Virginia, scuba diving in the Florida Keys, white-water rafting and boating on the Potomac.
- We take on climbing and repelling, caving, canoeing, backpacking, and snow camping.
- We encourage active participation of our parents and adult leaders through outings, one annual mulch fundraiser and service projects in our community.

Merit Badges
Earning merit badges gives Scouts self-confidence by teaching them to overcome obstacles to achieve a goal. The Scout also learns career skills, develops socially, and may develop physical skills and hobbies that give a lifetime of healthful recreation. To earn merit badges the following sequential steps shall be followed:
- Obtain merit badge application (“Blue Card”) from the Scoutmaster or Advancement Chairman. The card must be signed by the Scoutmaster showing his approval to work on the merit badge.
- Contact the merit badge counselor and arrange meetings. Names of qualified counselors are available on the Troop 160 website. In addition, specific merit badge activities and their counselors should appear in the Troop newsletter and announced at the weekly meetings.
- Complete the merit badge requirements under the guidance of the counselor.
- Ensure the counselor signs the card verifying completion of all requirements.
- Return the card to the Scoutmaster and obtain his signature to indicate completion of the merit badge requirements.
- Present the completed card to the Advancement Chariman for forwarding to the NCAC council for registration and procurement of the badge. The badges should be made available for Scout recognition by the next Troop Court of Honor.
- Keep the portion of the card that is marked for the Scout for future reference. It will be required as part of the Scout’s Eagle application.
