Hill in Caroline County, Virginia. 2010 will mark the 100th anniversary of Scouting and you will want to be a part of this celebration. The Order of the Arrow needs to recruit 500 youth and adults to be a part of its staff to make its programs a success at the National Scout Jamboree. The Order will run three programs – The OA Service Corps, the Mysterium Compass, and the OA Indian Village. At the 2010 National Scout Jamboree, the OA will be celebrating its 60th anniversary of the OA Service Corps. The OA Service Corps provides assistance in the many Jamboree program and support areas. The OA Indian Village will have representations of various tribes of North America, will assist Scouts in earning the Indian Lore Merit Badge, and will have tribal vignettes of dancers and singers traveling throughout the Jamboree. The Mysterium Compass will offer a patrol based activity that will take Scouts through a series of challenges with special effects and theatrical acting similar to the previous OA shows including 123, Scoutopia, and Odyssey of the Law.

If you missed the recent outing at Beatty’s, talk to someone who was there! I’m sure they’ll tell you what a great time they had and how everyone who went could find something worth writing home about.

Many of the new Scouts I spoke with told me they especially liked the 5-mile hike and the opportunity to prepare their own foil lunches on Saturday. Others told me they liked searching for Mr. Cristler in the woods. Some of the older guys told me they really liked the desserts some of our adult leaders prepared for them on Saturday evening. Others mentioned the team-building activities during Troop Leadership Training. A few of the adults mentioned the Sunday morning service some of our Scouts led. And almost everyone told me one of their favorite activities was the Super Soakdown competition we held on Saturday afternoon. In almost every instance, the feedback included the comment, “it’s a lot more fun when more kids are there.”

If you want to see what you may have missed, or if you want to re-live the fun memories you’ve made, be sure to check out the special insert in this week’s newsletter. I promise no one will get wet…this time!

I’d like to acknowledge the help and support of everyone who made this weekend a success. It was one of the larger crowds in recent memory and so many Scouts and parents helped to keep things running smoothly. Mr. Crowe and I are particularly grateful to the Arrowmen who cooked meals for us at the campout (Brian B, Kevin B, Billy C, Charlie H, Ryan H, Mrs. Murphy, Sam M, John R, DJ S, and Eric S), the Troop Guides who cooked breakfast for the First Year Scout patrols (Chris L and DJ), our SPLs (Matt C, Jeremy S, Alex B, and Jon W), the adult leaders who camped with us and performed a variety of support and leadership roles, the parents who drove Scouts to and from the campout, Mr. Cristler for dropping in on us and attempting to evade our Scouts by camouflaging himself in the woods, each of you for participating in our campout, and Mr. Beatty for allowing us to use his property.

Mr. Bailey (Co-Scoutmaster)
